Vineyard
Katanna Vineyard is family owned
and operated. It is situated on the Middleton's farm in idyllic Apple
Tree Creek, which is close to the cane farming town of Childers, and
about 50kms from Bundaberg, in South-East Queensland.
Pam and Barry moved to the area from Darwin, and formerly Papua New
Guinea. The vineyard was established about seven years ago, along with
an olive grove. They have committed to producing top quality wines, and
are proud to have successfully established a vineyard free from the
chemical sprays used in normal viticulture. Their daughters, Kate and
Anna, after whom the vineyard is named, visit regularly with their
husbands from WA to help with picking and pruning.
The whole farm is registered under Greening Australia's Land for
Wildlife, and consists of 155 acres, three quarters of which is
timbered. Native wildlife such as wallabies, kangaroos, squirrel
gliders and many types of native birds (including red-tailed black
cockatoos and red-backed fairy wrens) abound, and are encouraged. There
is also an old stock horse, called Dudsy, who manages to be part
of most goings on.
